DONT TALK TO THE COPS! : BREMELOVE
A few miles from my home in Bremerton is a venue called The Charleston. The Charleston is a tiny theater converted to a concert hall in Bremerton’s seediest district. The theater marquee now reads ALL AGES / BAR w/ID on one side and touts upcoming shows for such unheard of hardcore bands as HOT DEATH, and HOBO GOBLIN on the other. It’s just outside the gates of the ungainly sprawl of Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, nestled between three or four adult video stores, a few tattoo parlors, some of our most beloved pawn shops, and the moth-balled aircraft carriers from the Reagan-era fleet.
In the same week Don’t Talk To The Cops gained international attention via MTV Iggy (interview, and artist of the week), in the same year they were signed to a major label (Greedhead Records), they came to said nowhere bar, perpetually reserved for Bremerton’s most hardcore bands, and tore down the stage like it was their own last chance. Don’t Talk To The Cops! didn’t really have to play in Bremerton at all, but they did, and it was good.
Don’t Talk To The Cops! consistently stage a fun-in wherever they land. Never before has their loveable “weirdness” (for lack of a better term) been so apparent to me, or for that matter so gratefully appreciated. I’ve seen the trio frolic, rock, and rap before thousands at Neumo’s in Seattle, and witnessed their act before less than fifty at The Charleston in Bremerton tonight. When Kitsap based Invisible Friend productions announced their show in Bremerton, I wondered what it would be like when they departed from their perch high atop Capitol Hill in Seattle and descended upon my hardscrabble town. Immediate first impression is that they were going completely “in” as the kids say. Bles One, suited in Stussy and wayfarers, has an eighties pop star stage presence that’s perfectly ridiculous, and coupled with Emeck’s fly girl dance moves and Larry Mizells one man turntable mosh pit, the combination is positively excitable. Bles One also has perfectly ridiculous rap flows, never missing a beat while dancing routines with Emecks back and forth, and the hypeman position is perfectly suited for Mizell, who’s always behind the music demanding you listen well.
They were preceded by a pretty good live set from Tacoma group The BreakLites, who I’d only been exposed to via their Live at Jooniors session and some casual bandcamp listening. Their raps were well wrought at times (that “robots don’t have feelings” shit is the jam), and their music, distinctively colored by live electric guitar riffs, and Pete Frampton style talkbox, gave a pretty good Pfunk meets Gfunk vibe here and there. I thoroughly enjoyed their synth work and beats.
Prior to that, DJ Fish Boogie opened up with some good ol’fashioned scratch work/meets new fangled laptop production. It was a disco flair/bop jazz sax meets bass affair that was actually mad decent.
I spent most of the time playing Foosball with my kids, whose friends parents wouldn’t let me bring them to no Hip Hop show in Bremerton (“not interested at this time”, was one moms Stepford-like reply). We ate gummy worms and talked about b-boy dancing. I did feel weird about having my kids in a bar, but they’re festival worthy little soldiers, and all ages means ALL ages to me dammit. One of my little guys was tired as a shipyard worker after graveyard shift, and just laid his little head down after The BreakLites set. I was ready to leave (I mean, what would people think?) but then my youngest son said “Hey, I thought you said we came to see Don’t Talk To The Cops!?” I agreed we had, and he said “We stay.” I’m glad we did. DTTTC! proceeded to lay down danceable jam after hammed up cut that woke up the dance floor and had every b-boy body dancing and head-bobbing along.
Their set included a NEW SONG that had El Mizzell doing his own toothbrushing version of the cooking dance, and was at least as fun and hard fought as their last show in front of a much larger crowd (Emecks was on fire!). Near the end —during Someday I’m Gonna Be Rich— both of my own little b-boys were well past dancing and into sleepy time, and I had to excuse the family early. I think the kids picked up some new dance moves, though, and I learned a thing or two about attitude; whether your heart is in the 253 or 206, you take it with you wherever you go, and luckily for us tonight it was all heart in the 360.

thank you for this review and for coming out last night. much #lovefamily
